Model bicycle out of wire
Description: (1998)
A bike out of wire and rubber bands, made with pliers
Motivation:
I like bending wire with pliers. I had just figured out how to make hinges, this was a nice application of what I could do.
Discussion:
Although most of the joints are kind of rusted by now, all the obvious things turn and spinning the pedals turns the wheel. The direction of the front wheel (it spins too) can be turned by the handlebars. The pedals and back wheel are connected with a chain of orthodontic rubber bands. Unfortunately the chain would fall off the back wheel calling for redesign. It became sort of a topology problem, in the end I decided on a design that would only let it turn one revolution; limited, but it worked.
